Jim Shifler was born on a farm in Frederick County, MD, on October 27, 1927. While he was very young his family moved to Washington County, MD where he continues to reside. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948 and traveled to The South Pole with Admiral Byrd during the 1947 Expedition. Following his discharge from the Navy Jim worked for eleven years as a meter reader for The Potomac Edison Company and in 1959 became an agent with Nationwide Insurance Company. In 1996 Jim was inducted into the Nationwide Hall of Fame, an honor bestowed on only the best of the best. Since his retirement from Nationwide in December 1987, Jim has done extensive charity work with The American Cancer Society and The Salvation Army.
